Volunteer Job Descriptions for Hopkins Hurricane Swim Meets

Who needs to volunteer? All Hurricane swim families are required to volunteer a minimum of one session at each meet that our club hosts during the season. The information on this page is general in nature and may be revised prior to a scheduled Hopkins Hurricanes Swim Meet.

Announcer:

You will announce the event, heat and the names of the kids of each race. Qualifications include being able to speak clearly, and to quickly be able to pronounce sometimes very unfamiliar names.

Awards:

The awards team will organize ribbons, medals, and certificates for the swimmers that have earned them in each event.

Concessions:

Sell, Sell, Sell! Help to serve food and keep the area clean and stocked with the items we sell. You will not however be able to watch the meet when volunteering for this position.

The Concessions/Runner will also need to be able to run out to make emergency concession supply purchases.

Head Timer:

The head timer starts their two stopwatches simultaneously at the start of each race. In the event a lane timer has a miscue with their own stopwatch, you will trade them one of your two watches so that they can get a back-up time for that race.

Lane Timer:

Each lane will have two timers there to provide back-up times in case the electronic system fails for any reason during a race. The first timer starts a stopwatch at the start of each race and then stops it at the end of the race. The second timer pushes a button when the racer touches the timing pad at the end of each race. The second timer also writes down the stopwatch time for each race. Timers also keep the kids lined up in the proper order as they await the start of each race. This is a fast-paced volunteer opportunity. It’s also a GREAT place to watch the meet from.

Times Runner:

The times runners will “run” to get back-up “times” for the Colorado timing personnel. When back-up times for a race are required, the Colorado timers will hand you a clipboard for you to take to get the back-up times for a specific lane and race. You simply go to that lane, ask the timers for back-up times for that race, write them down and bring them back to the scoring table.

Meet Set-Up:

Help to set-up at the pool the night before the meet. If you can’t make it during the weekend days, this is a way to fulfill your volunteer obligations. Volunteers will meet at North Jr. High where you will collect donated concessions items, and bring them to the pool. You will then help to set-up chairs on the pool deck, haul supplies to and set-up the concessions area.

Duty Times:

Due to the fact that meet timelines (meet start and end times) are not finalized until one week prior to each meet, it is impossible to state the exact start and end times for volunteer shifts. The times listed on the volunteer sign-up roster are therefore only the best approximation. Please visit the Hurricanes website the week of the meet for actual shift start and end times.
